Student Exams

Because of the extensive range of specialisms available we do not provide any set syllabus materials. All examinations are the teacher's own creation or choice of external syllabi. We may be able to recommend external syllabi on request. The following examinations are available to PMA Teachers:

Graded Exams (click for more information)

Medal Tests (click for more information)

Teacher's Ongoing Assessment (click for more information)

General

- Exams can be assessed by a PMA Examiner in person (in which case an additional charge to cover costs will be levied) or via a DVD recording (which incurs no additional cost after the entry fee).

- An Exam Submission form must accompany all DVDs, this will be provided on request.

- We recommend the use of a DVD recording for exams where possible, this helps to keep costs down. A professional recording is not necessary, a home made recording of reasonable quality is perfectly acceptable.

- No uniform is specified by the PMA, we simply ask that we are able to see the student's clearly and that any footwear worn is appropriate to the style and dancewear is suitable for the age of the student.

- A maximum of 6 students can be examined in the same group, we recommend groups of 3 or 4. Students dance together at all times although dances may be performed as solos at the teacher's discretion. Dances should be between 1-3 minutes long. Warm-ups and technical exercises need only be short.

- Adults are equally entitled to enter exams and may do so alongside children.

- A minimum of £50 worth of examining can be examined in an any one session, any fewer will be increased to meet the £50 minimum charge.

- Teachers may of course add their own 'Studio Fee' to the exam entry fee to cover the cost of studio hire/wages etc.

- Teachers are required to calculate the total exam fees for their session and submit full payment with the DVD (a spreadsheet will be provided or teachers can request a manual sheet which would be handwritten). If an Examiner is to attend the exam session in person a separate invoice will be issued to cover the Examiner's travel/accommodation/time etc. which is payable in advance of the session along with the exam fees.

- Results are usually provided within 2 weeks of receipt of the DVD (or exam day where a PMA Examiner attends). Certificates/Medals/Plaques/Awards will take a little longer to arrive.

- Teachers will receive a teacher's report detailing any areas for improvement etc. Student reports are not provided although report forms can be provided for the teacher to complete on request.

- Whilst we will always endeavor to use an Examiner who has expertise in the technique being examined, because of the wide range of specialisms offered this may not always be possible. As a result some exams will instead be marked by an Examiner specialised in other areas with a high level of general knowledge in dance.
